Dulnuan Support Committee

This afternoon the Jocelyn Dulnuan Support Committee held a press conference and a fundraiser with the Filipino Association of the City of Vaughan. Some 160 people attended the event. Speaking on the panel were Imie Belanger, relative of Jocelyn and member of BIBAK, and Ma. Sol Pajadura of Migrante Ontario. Marissa and Belen were there with me earlier this evening.

The Vigil Service was held Oct. 14 at San Lorenzo Ruiz Anglican Church

The Service of lighting a candle was held at the Parish of San Lorenzo Ruiz Anglican Church 525 Bloor St. East, Toronto,Ontario. The service was incorporated into the Holy Eucharist of the Parish at 12:30 Sunday. Several community members attended and expressed their emotions and their resolve to seek justice for Jocelyn Dulnuan. Several members of the parish, where the Rev. Ariel Dumaran is pastoring are from the Norther part of the Philippines where the Indigenous peoples of the Cordillera. Jocelyn Dulnuan was from the Ifugao region. The people called Igorots, which means people of the mountains, are known as BIBAK. It is an acronym for Benguet, Ifugao, Bontoc, Apayao, and Kalinga. They are peoples who have various tribes, cultures, and dialects that maintain their traditions since the European conquest. They have remained distinct from the rest of Philippine population which is Latinized by the West. The Igorots, have somehow, preserve their cultures through their engineering feats such as the ever present self sustaining, rice Terraces of Banaue and other agricultural areas based on high altitudes.
They consider themselves as indigenous and minority in the Philippines. Jocelyn Dulnuan came from the Ifugao region in the mountain ranges of the Cordillera. Our parish felt that we need the Filipinos' support. Hundreds showed up that Sunday.
Associations like Siklab, Ugnayan ng Kabataan sa Canada, Migrante, Silayan Community Centre and Kababayan, The General Consul also came, The PIDC, several Press, SEAS, Philippine Reporter, members of CASJ, BIBAK association, Honorable Minister Peggy Nash (MP), The Intercede, and
other Community Leaders came together
to surround the tiny candle of Jocelyn, with the rest of the candles by the people.
The pursuit of justice will not end until Jocelyn's perpetrators are exposed and made to pay for their crime. The outcome of the Vigil resulted in solidarity between, the Consulate and its people. Talks are made and conversation become fruitful when we see each other eye to eye and speak our hearts to each other. The consulate is our home, our family, and it must reflect also our pains and struggles.
We are happy to see the love and compassion which prevailed in the air of confusions and anger, and judgements. The good can still come out of the worst situation of people who seek the truth and justice. (Fr. Ariel Dumaran)
